Selati Camp: A Wild Retreat

 

A Pristine Wilderness

Selati Camp is nestled on the banks of the Selati River within the expansive 33,000-hectare Selati Game Reserve, located west of the Kruger National Park. This vast, undeveloped reserve offers a diverse topography and rich biodiversity, providing an ideal setting for immersive wildlife experiences.

 

A Unique Ecosystem

The eastern region of the reserve is characterized by towering granite koppies, home to majestic Black Eagles and agile Klipspringers. The dominant vegetation, consisting of Combretum and Mopane woodlands, supports a thriving population of elephants and giraffes. The Selati River, which winds its way through the reserve, transforms into a series of picturesque rock pools during the dry winter months, attracting a variety of birdlife and wildlife, including Nyala

A Wildlife Lover's Paradise

Selati Game Reserve offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Visitors can encounter a wide range of animals, including lions, leopards, elephants, and a diverse array of plains game such as eland, sable antelope, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, waterbuck, kudu, impala, baboons, and monkeys. The reserve is particularly renowned for its large herds of eland and its rare sable antelope population.

Temperatures and Accommodation

 

Climate

Selati Camp experiences a subtropical climate. During the summer months (approximately November to March), daytime temperatures typically range from 35°C to 37°C (95°F to 99°F), with nighttime temperatures cooling down to around 20°C (68°F). Winters (approximately June to August) are mild, with daytime temperatures averaging between 18°C and 25°C (64°F to 77°F). Nighttime temperatures can drop to as low as 4°C (39°F), with occasional cooler nights. While summer rainfall is common, often in the form of intense thunderstorms, winter rainfall is less frequent.

 

Accommodation

The camp offers 10 simple dome tents, each accommodating two learners. Each tent is equipped with two mattresses and pillows. Shared bathroom facilities and a communal area overlooking the dry riverbed are available. Learners are requested to bring their own bedding, including an additional pillow if needed. Please note that mosquito nets are not provided at Selati Camp.

 

Communal Area

A thatched, open-sided deck serves as the communal area for meals, lectures, and study sessions. A nearby clearing provides a perfect setting for evening campfires, fostering a relaxed and social atmosphere.
